SMG Consulting Group

The SMG Consulting Group is unlike any you have worked with. We help companies move from a market-share strategy to a market ownership position. From the red sea of market share to the blue ocean of market dominance. The results yield what we call innovative 10X business solutions with measurable success in both maximizing opportunity and mitigating risk.

At SMG 10X we think strategic and act tactically. We are hands on, goal focused and execute. We ask—are you agile, adaptive and can you execute in the dynamic and relentless sea state change in your markets? Where will your revenue come from this year? In five years? How will you compete in a world where 70% of the global business growth in next few years will come from emerging markets and multinationals are now rapidly moving not just manufacturing facilities but R&D departments to these emerging markets?

Many US firms have scaled back or lost their manufacturing and operations competence or sent it off shore. This poses risk and opportunity but the strong margin improvement enjoyed for the last decade with low cost hands and minds is starting to close. Today we are seeing the slow march of engineering and innovation expertise move to emerging markets as well. We help companies work through these constant changes and develop focused and sustainable business plans.

Few of these foreign and emerging firms suffer like the established west from legacy systems and methods and they are hungry to grow and create wealth. They have a massive consumer base fueling the thirst. Will they be your customers too?

We've all learned very few companies or industries are permanently excellent or static. Change is constant and opportunity abounds as markets expand and contract. Embracing change is a solid first step, knowing how to do it in an intentional way to achieve 10X solutions is the optimum. It is in this area SMG 10X creates lasting value for its clients.

If you are engaged in business commerce in any industry or segment, a key metric is increasing customer satisfaction at a profit. Traditional methods focus on inching forward by securing more market share in systematic and actionable ways and driving out costs. These methods are well known and established and tend to create commodities, slow response time to threats, and rely on brute force approach. They also have heavy working capital demands and can breed inward looking even dogmatic cultures. Recent events have revealed many examples. Some have been remade and will endure. Others have perished or will do so.

At SMG 10X we help companies avoid or move from traditional models by placing an emphasis on value creation, customer driven growth, and industry changing disciplines among them innovation and marketing. The strategy, process and tools utilized result in innovative 10X business solutions. That means more effective and efficient use of all company resources (customers, technology, employees, money, suppliers, PPE, time, etc.) including traditional working capital.

SMG 10X works with its client partners to identify and execute quantum leap solutions to both acute and chronic business challenges. It is in this "discontinuity" that we help our clients find their compass point and where opportunity abounds. We use a full complement of business processes and methods including "blue ocean strategies" employing what we call a "10X tool kit" to move companies from this high-churn, fast burn-out and unsustainable dynamic to a destination that is intentional, customer focused, profit driven and sustainable. The result is achieving an innovative 10X business solution.10X Growth from the Top

Extraordinary growth can be achieved through a method called "10X" or quantum growth. 10X is a strategy for finding a path to the future that is based on sound principles and proven experience. Growth is the increase and change in an enterprise or organization over time; a process of becoming larger. A strategic change moves from a current state, called X, to a future state in which the change is measured in orders of magnitude. It refers to those rare moments when something creates a "10x change" — a change 10 times greater than your average everyday change. Leadership believes in the exponential growth capacity of each team member. A 10X change is any change in a business environment that could potentially cause an industry change.

The impact of 10X change is best captured by Intel's Andy Grove in his 1996 book Only the Paranoid Survive. Writes Grove: "When a change in how some element of one's business is conducted becomes an order of magnitude larger than what that business is accustomed to, then all bets are off. There's wind and then there's a typhoon, there are waves and then there's a tsunami. There are competitive forces and then there are super competitive forces. I'll call such a very large change a '10X' change. In the face of such '10X' forces, you can lose control of your destiny. Things happen to your business that didn't before, your business no longer responds to your actions as it used to."

We foster 10X change. We help firms find successful paths of least resistance, often within their own businesses. We help firms find customer insights and capabilities to renew their business model. For businesses to survive, growth is an imperative, rather than an option. Sometimes the most straightforward way to create value is top-line revenue growth, which is usually an easier path than alternative methods such as M&A, cost reduction or changes in ownership structure. However, for all its positive implications, achieving growth is a complex and difficult equation.

Only a small minority of companies succeed in their attempts at sustained growth. For one, too many companies leave money on the table in their core businesses, failing to optimize for cost and revenue opportunities. For another, companies selling into mature markets need to expand their horizons. We help them look for new sources of revenues, or adjacencies, via new distribution channels, customer segments or geographies, and avoid taking a step too far. Finally, in an era of increasing turbulence, some companies will hit a wall in their traditional business lines and need to renew their core.

The graphic below is a "road map" for understanding 10X with four main branches answering the following questions: Why? What? How? & What if? The branches lead to paths that expand on the concepts.

For our clients to discern opportunities and create 10X solutions we implement a five phase process. It is based in part on Peter Drucker's conclusion that "the future that has already happened is not within the present business; it is outside: a change in society, knowledge, culture, industry, or economic structure. It is, moreover, a major trend, a break in the pattern rather than a variation within it. Looking for the future that has already happened and anticipating its impacts introduces new perception in the beholder. The need is to make oneself see it. What then could or should be done is usually not too difficult to discover. The opportunities are neither remote nor obscure. The pattern has to be recognized first. Predicting the future can only get you in trouble. The task is to manage what is there and to work to create what could and should be." (Managing for Results, 1964).

People can adopt change—even volunteer for it. All companies and industries can, if they sincerely desire it, see change and foster a culture to view the dynamic of change not as something to avoid but as opportunity. It is essential in the goal setting and change dynamic for economic performance to come first. At SMG 10X we guide companies through the constant of change to arrive at a winning economic strategy pointing to and resulting in a 10X solution. Part of that process involves asking the five essential questions every company should be asking themselves: What is our mission? Who is our customer? What do our customers value? What are our results? What is our plan?

A deeper dive into a company's strategy can expose hidden reefs. For example, is your company facing heightened competition from domestic and international rivals?

Take the Innovation Challenge Survey.

Answers will reveal the true condition of a company that may be struggling to stay alive. Not surprisingly most companies we surveyed answered YES to more than 50% of these questions. This is sure sign of a company vulnerable to competition and even extinction.

Our research indicates the ability to achieve innovative 10X Business solutions has few limitations. It can be achieved by young or old firms, young or old managers, industries that are new or established, in high tech and low tech companies, in private and public firms and without preference to geographical location or nationality. It is global and it is limited only by human imagination and willingness to discover, explore and embrace. It does result in a deep understanding of company and self by executive leadership teams and instills patience, focus and intentional actions, course corrections, perseverance and commitment. Successful 10X solution companies avoid benchmarking the competition as a metric for change. 10X usually requires a CEO initiative within an enterprise to succeed.

SMG 10X has a wide range of experience in many industries and has executed successful 10X solutions in each.
